It is worthwhile to read Il resto di niente starting from that brief authors' note, which Striano wrote to answer to one of the many literary problems he had to face. It is an historical novel, he points out, according to the classification of literary genders, because each novel is historical since it is imbedded in a period and it is voice of a time, but it is at the same time experimental, like each new writing proof.
Not a biography nor a romance life, Striano specifies because both genders do not allow to narrate historical events using that freedom postulated by Aristotle, Tasso, Manzoni and other great writers but require an univocal interpretation of dates, facts, happenings. Striano works on the double track of historical reconstruction and free imaginative invention within the novel format, which he considers the most effective and valid. This choice is explained in the already mentioned interview for «Uomini e libri» where Striano declares his agreement with Michail Bachtin, who believes that novel is the only in progress literary gender, which can reflect the becoming of reality in an deep, essential, sensitive way «because only who becomes can understand the becoming process” .
In the novel it is moreover possible to mix “social plural discourse”, “plurilinguism”, “individual pluralism” in historical novel all this cooperate to a process of modernization, deleting time boundaries, towards the discovery of eternal present in the past. In the same interview Striano says:
I add that my novel is meant to be not only the memorial of times lost, but research of the remote causes of the progressive fading of the role of Naples, intended as one of the canon places of world and spirit..., as well as the slow making up of the contemporary ideologies (Enlightment, Arcadia, Romanticism) and of some beliefs of our time which do not seem to be the last causes of the malaise nowadays Naples, Europe and the whole world live in.
Analysing the gender novel the author finds tools and strategies to construct his aesthetic and narrative system. In the essay Cattiva coscienza.
